This deep gorge has been formed over 100 million years, first by massive eruptions and large amounts of volcanic debris that accumulated to a depth of more than 1000m, then by a river flowing over many thousands of years eroding the area to create the impressive landform visitors can see here today. Walk along the trail, imagine the scale of previous volcanic activity as you marvel at the sheer cliffs and enjoy some of the unique flora and fauna in the area which are supported by an abundance of fresh river water.
