Mt. Kasayama and Hagi Castle Town

Kikuya-yokocho Street

The centre of Hagi is surrounded by rivers and the sea. This area once flourished as a castle town where feudal warriors lived 150 - 400 years ago. Today, you can still feel the atmosphere of that era as you walk along the traditional streets and discover old buildings and feudal culture in a town that was created by igneous activity. In the north-east of the castle town lies Mt. Kasayama, a small mountain that was formed by eruptions 10,000 years ago. Visitors are able to touch the hardened lava along the coast, an area that was once utilised by the local people to provide stone materials to make the castle town.
